Can thyroid nodule features on non-contrast CT scans be helpful in the evaluation of thyroid nodules incidentally found on PET/CT scans?

چکیده
BACKGROUND Thyroid nodules are commonly found on medical imaging studies, such as Computerized Tomography (CT) scans, 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/CT (PET/CT) scans, or other imaging studies, which are performed for another reason (ie. the test is ordered without knowledge of the presence of a thyroid nodule). When thyroid nodules are detected on imaging studies performed for another reason, these are referred to as thyroid ‘incidentalomas.’ One of the questions that comes up after detecting a thyroid incidentaloma, is whether the nodule may be a thyroid cancer, and this question often results in additional testing to address the concern. This study was performed to investigate whether, in thyroid incidentilomas detected on PET/CT scan, the detailed features of the nodule on this the imaging study could predict whether the nodule was a cancer or not.

Benign and Malignant Thyroid Incidentalomas Are Rare in Routine Clinical Practice: A Review of 97,908 Imaging Studies.
PURPOSE Thyroid nodules incidentally identified on imaging are thought to contribute to the increasing incidence of thyroid cancer. We aim to determine the true rate of incidental thyroid nodule reporting, malignancy rates of these nodules, and to compare these findings with rates of detection by dedicated radiology review. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was done to determine the prevalen...

Thyroid nodules are a common problem found in up to two-thirds of the population on ultrasound examination. Nodules are often encountered incidentally on exams performed for other purposes. The prevalence increases with age and with radiation exposure and is higher amongst women. Approximately 5-15% of nodules are malignant; therefore, deciphering which nodules warrant attention is important. F...

Objective(s): Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) examination is commonly used for the evaluation of pulmonary nodules since it provides both anatomical and functional information. However, given the dependence of this evaluation on physician’s subjective judgment, the results could be variable. The purpose of this study was to develop an automated scheme for the classific...

We report an unusual case of a young male with cerebellar hemangioblastoma treated previously for medullary carcinoma of thyroid, whose PET/CT scans revealed a constellation of findings that suggested the rare Von Hippel Lindau syndrome. The diagnosis was clinched by confirming the findings on whole body contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and contrast enha...

BACKGROUND Thyroid nodules with indeterminate fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) results remain a diagnostic dilemma, because 70 - 85% of these nodules have been found to be benign after thyroid surgery. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in the preoperative diagnosis o...
